Housing Authority of DeKalb County
Johnson Ferry East Revitalization
Located on Johnson Ferry Road in DeKalb County, the Johnson Ferry East Apartments were constructed in 1948, and acquired by the Housing Authority of DeKalb County in 1978. Over the years, the Johnson Ferry East Apartments deteriorated with age, and in 2005 the Housing Authority embarked on a plan to redevelop the site into a new mixed-income, mixed-use community, which would continue to serve senior residents of Johnson Ferry East, as well as the surrounding neighborhood.
Scope of Services
The Collaborative Firm has been engaged as a co-developer, along with the Housing Authority of DeKalb County, to redevelop the former Johnson Ferry East Apartments. Through this partnership, the Firm has worked closely with area stakeholders, Johnson Ferry East residents and DeKalb County officials to ensure that the redeveloped community — which upon completion will include senior apartments, luxury apartments, single-family residences, neighborhood retail and restaurants, a public park, and a PATH Foundation multi-use trail — will be an asset to the area.
In the co-developer role, The Collaborative Firm has provided invaluable services, including coordination with DeKalb County officials on planning and development matters, collaboration with the DeKalb County Tax Assessors, and outreach to both existing Johnson Ferry East residents, as well as residents of surrounding neighborhoods. Through this process a Neighborhood Working Group was established to facilitate ongoing and open communication between the development team and area residents, the site received the necessary zoning and variance approvals with remarkable support from the community, and the development team has continued to work closely with the Neighborhood Working Group to keep them abreast of project activities and to receive feedback on various aspects of the development. Since November 2007, as a result of the Firm’s efforts, along with those of the Housing Authority and others on the development team, including local officials, hundreds seniors moved from their former apartments at Johnson Ferry East into their beautiful new homes at Ashford Parkside and Ashford Landing Senior Residences.
