Alex Fite-Wassilak provides a range of expertise to the Firm, encompassing architecture, design, planning, urban design, and master planning.
Prior to joining The Collaborative Firm in 2009, Alex developed his architectural and planning skills in a variety of different roles to further his understanding and practice of urban design for the public realm. Most notably, Alex served as a research intern at the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) where he analyzed local government sustainability efforts and developed a set of criteria for green government certification which later became ARC’s Green Communities Program.
Alex has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Brown University and Master’s Degrees in Architecture and City and Regional Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a Nix-Mann Fellow and a Charles R. Brown Urban Design Fellow.
REPRESENTATIVE PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Highway 138 Corridor Zoning Overlay District:
Urban Designer for formulation of Design Guidelines implemented along the Highway 138 Corridor in Clayton County, Georgia. The Design Guidelines are a public document that set up guiding principles with corresponding graphic examples that help focus development to conform to community concerns.
Douglas County Adult Detention Center:
Architectural support and design services for the County’s new $100+ million Jail and Law Enforcement Center. Support services include assistance with preparation of construction documents, and construction administration support. Construction is projected to begin in Fall of 2010, and the new facilities are expected to be occupied in Fall of 2012.
Lake Oconee Residence:
Design consultant and project manager for a 5,000+ sf luxury house built in the Lake Oconee Area. Collaborated with clients and design team to deliver project within a comfortable timeline and budget. The house is expected to break ground in the first quarter of 2011.
DeKalb Sustainability Plan:
Part of a multi-disciplinary team preparing a Sustainability Plan for DeKalb County, Georgia. Researched land use programs and policies that could be put in place to reduce greenhouse gases and urban heat island effects. Additionally checked accepted government level sustainable practices against existing codes and ordinances for the county. Compiled the resulting sustainability findings into a succinct report making recommendations for the county’s strategic use.
Atlanta Regional Commission, Environmental Division:
Worked as research intern in charge of researching local government efforts towards greater environmental sustainability in the region and worldwide. Condensed research into a set of criteria for a green government certification program that later became ARC’s Green Communities program.
