Tyler McSwain provides a range of expertise to the Firm, encompassing architecture, design, planning, urban design, and master planning.

Prior to joining The Collaborative Firm, Tyler developed his architectural and planning skills in a variety of different roles to further his understanding and practice of urban design for the public realm.  Also, Tyler has  served in both the private and public sector with various projects throughout metropolitan Atlanta.

Tyler has a Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies from Tennessee State University and a Master’s Degree in Architecture from Kennesaw State University


Clayton County Planning & Zoning Professional Services:  The Collaborative Firm has provided professional planning and zoning services to the Clayton County Community Development Department.  Tyler  has served Clayton County’s Planning and Zoning office as Planner conducting zoning assessments, technical reviews, staff report preparation, responding to zoning inquiries, and advising local elected officials on planning and zoning matters.

Atlanta Beltline Inc. (ABI), Summer Fellowship                                                                                        Tyler served as a community engagement and planning fellow for the Atlanta Beltline. Tyler’s duties included preparation for public meetings for community outreach for the impacted communities near the Atlanta Beltline trail area and also research of design issues that may impact future projects and communities. Tyler also worked with numerous departments and small projects throughout the summer term.

Kennesaw State University, Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)                                                         As a Graduate Research Assistant, Tyler researched and analyzed a land use project for the City of Marietta. The project included a proposal for the expansion of  the Kennesaw State University – South campus location LCI (Livable Centers Initiative). During this engagement, Tyler researched potential design issues referenced in the LCI study along with potential design theories and conflicts with the City of Marietta’s land use ordinance.

Henry County, GA. Government, Planner I

Tyler served as a planner for Henry County, and he was responsible for answering public questions and requests regarding zoning and land use issues. Mr. McSwain wrote official reports to the Zoning Advisory Board and worked concurrently with the Henry County Business Licenses and Building Department.  Tyler also updated and distributed GIS zoning maps to the public and coordinated special event permits throughout the county.

Nashville Civic Design Center (NCDC), Planner/Photographer Intern

Mr. McSwain served as an Intern with the Nashville Civic Design Center (NCDC),  as an Assistant Researcher/ Photographer for the Green Hills, TN Livability Community Project. During this engagement, Tyler provided service for public hearings which determined the quality of life attributes for the Green Hills Community in Nashville, Tennessee.

William Russell and Johnson, Inc. (WRJ), Engineering Intern

Tyler was an Engineering Intern to a Senior Architect and Civil Engineering Specialist supporting the Design Team providing drafting, engineering and administration assistance for transportation planning and design projects. Tyler also worked along civil engineers and community planners on off site visits to Johns Creek, Georgia.
